Why I Cannot Sleep

An American social discourse poem by Raileigh Duschen

Raileigh Duschen, American Poet

There is a war in my mind

That I can’t seem to let go

Herbicides on the side of the road

Fake clouds choking the sky

I ain’t fine

Oh I’m an angry woman

Who’s going to speak out fire

For underneath

Is the pressure of a lover

Who gives a damn about tomorrah

I can’t slow down

This world won’t let me rest

Why I cannot sleep?

Because I care too much

I care too much

Men won’t listen to an angry woman

For he is afraid to meet Himself

So She don’t have much of a choice

To sing about Love

As an open opportunity to escape

You cling to Her ankles

You don’t want Her to leave

So She rises in Her power

To birth a new world

over the one

they have destroyed

A woman speaks and a candle is lit

A strong wind blows in

An enemy you cannot see

For you know your time has come

What have you done

What have you done

— what will you do with what you have?
